Double Insulated Bathroom Fitting Advice

When it comes to choosing bathroom lighting, there are a few different ways to illuminate your room, and this can be made more difficult by the fact you do not have an Earth. Class 2 (double insulated) fittings will be able to be installed in a house with no Earth connection.

Essentially there are three main types of ways to light the bathroom, these are as follows;

Spotlights

Spotlights come in two forms, surface mounted and recessed. Surface mounted spotlights are normally designed in the way of Bars or Plates which contain the individual spots on them. The benefit of these types of lights is that they can be set in different positions to give the best light output.

To make them double insulated, the connection block is often inside a rubber tube and also further away from the metal parts of the fitting in comparison to a non double insulated one.

Secondly, recessed lighting is good for low ceilings and bathrooms which are a little short of space. These lights are installed by cutting out the plasterboard in a circle shape and recessing the lights into the roof. This can give a smart appearance and a good output of light. It is up to the designer of the bathroom how many of these lights are installed, however a general rule is approximately one light every 1-1.5 meters.

Flush Lights

Flush lights are very common in bathrooms with limited space and are very easy to fit. They give out a diffused light which does not create spots and are often low energy which will keep down energy consumption. More than one of these can be installed if the bathroom is larger for increased light output.

Wall Lights

Wall lights can be used to complement ceiling lights and to provide further illumination to certain aspects of the bathroom including mirrors, sinks, pictures and shelving etc. These are made double insulated much like many of the other fittings by protecting the connector block with rubber and often having a plastic box like casing around the connector making sure that there is no way a wire could touch the metal of the fitting. Many of our customers prefer to wire wall lights up to a dimmer switch to provide soft mood lighting in the bathroom.

Bathroom Mirrors

Most people have mirrors in their bathrooms, however an illuminated one can look stunning in a modern bathroom. The illumination not only lights up the bathroom, but is also helpful when applying make up or shaving. Some mirrors also include shaver sockets which can be handy for charging shavers and toothbrushes. There are a wide range of double insulated mirrors available online which will help if you have no earth in your bathroom but would like an illuminated mirror. The mirror wiring is exactly the same as a wall light and is just as simple swap around.
