We've had quite a few people recently ask us if its safe to have a light in their bathroom that doesn't require an Earth connection. One person in particular had been shocked to find his light that had been installed many years ago had the simple red and black cable and no Earth. He instantly thought it was unsafe and he was right because the light did require the earth connection.
This isn't the case however with all lights in the bathroom if you dont have an earth connection. Its perfectly fine to install a class 2 double insulated light that doesnt require the earth in there providing it has the correct IP-rating and is in the right zone (read our sister blog post for more information on bathroom zones here). IP ratings have no bearing on earth connections etc. So if you find you dont have an earth connection in your bathroom then you will need a class 2 double insulated light with preferably an IP rating of IP44.
