Double insulated LED strip light review
Lightahome have just launched their brand new double insulated ceiling batten light & we thought it would be good to review the product. Obviously being double insulated means the light doesn't need an earth connection which is great for homes with just a live and neutral in their lighting circuit.
The light itself measures 5ft which makes it great as a replacement for existing fluorescent battens in kitchens. Its described as a twin unit though its actually a little smaller (75mm depth by 87mm width) which works in some ways as it makes it compact. The first thing to note when you take it out the box is how sturdy the unit it. It is made of poly-carbonate and you can tell it is designed to last.
Manufactured from Poly-Carbonate the class 2 striplight appears very sturdy |
There is an access panel on the back which can be opened using a screwdriver to pop the 4 little catches open. The panel itself is very tightly held on to the unit but comes away easily with the screwdriver. Underneath is the wiring connections. As the unit is double insulated you can see connections for both live and neutral, as expected, but there is also room for an earth to be terminated in to a connector block if you have one. This fitting can be fitted if an earth is present. The actual connections are the push fit type that allow a strong grip on the wires. When fitting the exposed, stripped, wiring is merely pushed in to the slot and the connector grips on to it.
It is important to note that the electrical connections take place at one end of the unit, which may be worth noting if you are replacing an existing fitting. There are 2 access panels for wiring and the master end has a gland fitted to allow access (through the end of the fitting) for your cable. If you would like to fit more of the units then there is a handy access panel at the other end to connect further cable to the next light. (If this is the case a new hole needs to be drilled at this end and an enclosed spare gland can be fitted to take the cable to the next light).

The unit is manufactured very well and as previously mentioned all access panels are tightly fitted. One reason for this is the fact that the unit is IP65 rated. It is anti corrosive and waterproof so can be fitted in areas that are damp. Garages, sheds and workhouses are great places to fit these lights but they can also take the weather. This particular light is a 48W product and produces 4000 lumens of light output (measured through the integrated opal diffuser). When activated in our warehouse the unit creates plenty of light. The colour temperature of this class 2 double insulated strip light is 4000K which is natural white.

Inside the box is a little bag of fixing parts which include screws and plugs plus fixing brackets for your ceiling. There are also little metal chain supports to attach to the light should you wish to suspend the unit on chains, though chain does not come included & is provided by the installer. The bag also contains the spare gland previously mentioned and a comprehensive set of fitting instructions.
A traditional sleak design combined with modern LED technology and double insulated, not requiring an earth |
All in all this double insulated LED strip light is probably the best class 2 double insulated version of the old fashioned fluorescent fittings that we have come across so far. This product is now available to purchase on our website.
